Ride to Gettysburg Recap

By Charles C. Umbenhauer

September 26 marked the ninth annual Ride to Gettysburg sponsored by ABATE of PA in conjunction with State Representative Harry Readshaw. The ride raises funds to repair and restore all of the monuments in Gettysburg that were erected to honor the soldiers of Pennsylvania. A perpetual fund has been started to keep them repaired for all future generations. The annual motorcycle ride also provides funds to restore the Daniel Lady Farm on Hanover Road. This farm is the northern most Confederate site that has been saved and is in the restoration process. It was a field hospital and protected the left flank of the Confederate line. To learn more about this historic site go to

The day was cloudy from the get-go but it did not deter 255 riders from coming out and supporting the event. The day presented several challenges. First, a last minute change from the starting point on Commonwealth Avenue to North Street on the side entrance to the capitol. No big deal other than parking was somewhat tight once we squeezed all those bikes onto North Street.

The ride started on time at 1:00 PM led by the God Bless America Color Guard and Representative Dan Moul and Representative Jim Marshall. Also on the ride was former State Representative Teresa Forcier. On hand to greet everyone was State Representatives Mark Keller and Bill Kortz. And of course Representative Harry Readshaw who is responsible for the ride was also on hand.

I would be absolutely remiss if I did not add a special thank you to the following police departments who were outstanding in providing an escort all the way from Harrisburg to Battlefield Harley Davidson in Gettysburg.

Capitol Police
Camp Hill Police Department
East Pennsboro Township Police
Lower Allen Township Police
Upper Allen Township Police
Carroll Township Police
Gettysburg Police Department
Pennsylvania State Police
Latimore Township Police Department.

And of course the ABATE road guards led by Brian Howard did a great job.

It was a safe, although somewhat wet ride in which not a single vehicle passed our parade of bikes at any point in time.

Our efforts netted $11,022 with an additional $1,000 contributed by Dave and Jen LeVan owners of Battlefield H-D. In addition, the LeVan’s provided the chicken dinner for all attendees and the entertainment. The gun that was raffled off was won by the River Valley Chapter.

Once again ABATE of PA members proved that they can meet the challenges presented in order to have a successful event.

My personal thanks to each and everyone of you who came out and supported this years event.
